A snuffle or two on the South Side
We needed to get the car serviced today so headed for City Mazda, with a plan to walk back to 505. Here is the intended route. The basic route is Montague St; York St; Kingsway; St Kilda Rd.
To get the weather out of the way. It used to be said that if you don't like Melbourne weather wait 5 minutes and it will change. Not this day: a foul wind at 0805 and it was still howling at 1500hrs.The first - but not the last - graffiti was under the tram line on Montague St. This also features in today's second adventure.
I am unsure what to call this decoration on the Golden Fleece Hotel. It doesn't have the look or feel of graffiti: perhaps it is just decoration?
This joint, when approached from the direction we came, definitely appeared to be a venue where affection could be negotiated. However the building is very large and this is the back entrance: the front bit looks much more like a remedial massage operation (with the photos all of females receiving, rather than giving, the rubdown). A cursory scan of Google didn't really clarify matters. Perhaps it depends on what the customer orders?
Crossing on to York St I was surprised to find we were approaching the South Melbourne Market. We were aware of this place but had bever visited it before. The car park contains this proof we were in South Melbourne. I am surprised that after last Saturday' pathetic effort they hadn't repainted - or at least put sheets over - this edifice.
The market was interesting. Less fresh fruit etc than the QVM but an interesting place. The muzak was interesting (Creedence Clearwater Revival followed by Kim Carnes "Bette Davis Eyes" - Shazam was helpful with the latter!).
A queue at a patisserie.
More graffiti - I think on Cecil St.
Heading along York St again: I didn't note the function of this building.
An interesting old building that seemed to be for sale. Their website shows it was built in 1867 and it is basically a dining establishment. Note the image of the chief, lower left.
Getting on to St Kilda Rd and official communications look forward to an event on the 13th!
My memory of running this 7 years ago is that there were still quite a few cars parked in the slip road during the race which was a bit of a problem on the way out (kms 2 -6) as the crowd was pretty dense. It had thinned out by the way back kms 30 - 35 as the half runners turn off at Fitzroy St and the marathon runners have spread out.

In the afternoon I loaded my gear int my backpack and headed off to Port Melbourne to try to twitch a Blue-winged Parrot seen there. I had Kelp Gull and Singing Honeyeater as reserves. The route was into Swanson St and then catch a 109 along Collins St and out to the Port. (Come back on 109 to Montague St - see above - about 400m from City Mazda.) This worked OK apart from the ride along Collins St reminding me of peak hour at Shinjuku: just missing a few Sumo types ramming the punters into the carriage.
Here is the route. Red is getting to Princes Pier - Silver Gulls the main birds.
The wind was still howling and nearly all the birds were rats with wings of one sort or another. On getting back to Beacon Cove tram stop and PTV are in denial about the ferry to Tasmania: it has been departing from Geelong for about 6 months!
Proving that we made the right decision about not buying here!
I just dodged a bullet as a Petri dish - the Diamond Princess - with 2,700 victims was due on the 5th. It was already berthed at 0650.

If all goes to plan we will still be here on the 18th so will get to see the Queen Elizabeth come in that day!
