South Melbourne

 The aim of this was to have a post about the House Crow that has taken up residence in Clarendon St , South Melbourne.  This smap (sic) shows where sightings have been made to eBird.

Unfortunately I couldn't spot the bird (it was probably sitting in a nest it a well foliaged tree).  But I did see some excellent art.  This was in a lane off Coventry St, towards Kingsway: the building is a restuarant.

The next three are all in a lane parallel to Clarendon St, between Coventry and York Sts.


Having got better particulars on where the Crow was lurking I returned the next day.  One extra artwork was found.
I then assumed my common position (sitting in a gutter) when I spotted the nest in a leafy tree.
I shifted one door down to dining table and had a better  view of the nest.
Eventually a Little Raven flew to the nest and a two-toned Jackdaw rose and departed.  Good enough for me to count as a House Crow, my 503rd tick for Australia.

When garbage needs scavenging, send in an expert.
I then acquired a very nice Chicken and Lemongrass Bahn Mi at Luke's establishment, just behind the nest tree.  (On the Saturday afternoon there were about 12 people queued waiting for the rolls, some of them Vietnamese, so I thought it must be pretty good.)

A couple of additional places

 On Sunday 10th August we took #2 grand-daughter to the Melbourne Zoo.  It was a very pleasant outing and I was very pleased with how well #2 new her way around the Zoo.  I could have added lots of birds (eg Noisy Pitta, Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stork, Regent Honeyeater, Blue and Yellow Macaw) were it ot for the convention that birds in cages don't count! I didn't take photos until we got to the Meerkat enclosure, where they were irresistible.  They were very close and I didn't need my binoculars to see them! Heading back into the CBD Frances spotted a Pam-the-bird work we hadn't previously noticed.  Again, didn't need binoculars so see it. The Monday morning had clear skies with the sun reflecting off windows in the City. A birdy walk at Albert Park

 I hadn't been to Albert Park for a while and having paid for a tram ride to town and back in the morning it would cost me nothing to ride the rail to MSAC.  Well, nothing except a lot more time than expected and a rise in blood pressure.  The 16 tram took forever to arrive at 505 and then, at St Kilda Junction, the driver announced that as he was running late he was avoiding St Kilda and going along Dandenong Rd.  So half the passengers, including me got off and climbed on another #16 which was following. The #96 to get to MSAC turned up on Fitzroy quite quickly. Here is the route of my birding walk. The driving range was well covered with balls, but no indication how many shots were birdies. As soon as I got to the edge of the Lake (point1) I spotted the cocked tail of a Black-tailed Nativehen. A very good addition to my year list. The I spotted another bird of the same species. Mentone and nearby

 In my last post I mentioned getting my binoculars back from the zoo. I subsequently found that they had a problem focussing, such that they needed to visit binocular hospital.  For Swarovski, in Melbourne, that means Mentone Optical so we headed off there down the Nepean Highway.  Frances had found an Historic Walk around Mentone so we planned to do that once the patient had been ministered to.  The material for the walk included: "Parking is located at Mentone Railway Station and at the rear of Mentone Shopping Centre behind Mentone Parade " What the note didn't say was that nearly all the parking at the station and nearby would be taken, presumably by commuters and people going to the school!  We found a spot in a side street about 400m from the opticians (see X in map below).  Our approximate route is the yellow line.
