Mainly Simians

 Having joined the Zoo we thought t was a good idea to go for a visit mid-week to avoid the hordes of  family funsters.  I commented that there would probably be a lot of school groups, which there were , but they were not a problem with teachers being well in control.  

I suggested the Gorillas would be a good starting point.  Before we got to them we passed through the Ring-tailed Lemur enclosure.  This a lovely site as one is actually in the middle of the lemurs.  The tails are very tempting but there are always some staff around to offer advice.

The Lemurs don't seem at all fussed by humans: this one was as close as it looks, leading to a stffer rquest to give it a bit more room.
Some of their food turns up in paper bags to give them a little mental stimulation to get at it. THey seem to deal with this OK.
I managed one shot of a lemur in flight.
Next stop was the big blokes (and sheilas).  They also get their food in puzzle-packages and seem to enjoy playing with it.
I don't know if it is the same one, but last visit one of the apes was into toga mode!
On the way out we passed by the back of their enclosure where a very large person was stacking some solid zeds.
The Asian Small-clawed Otters seem to be included in both the Gorilla loop and the Forest loop.  This tunnel joins the 2 areas.  
3 Collared Peccaries seemed happy in their work.
A pair of Eclectus Parrots (male closer to camera.)
A Cotton-top Tamarin.
Then Emperor Tamarins.


A Sumatran Tiger: for some reason I kept thinking of the Lonnie Donegan song "My Old Man's a dustman"  which includes
Just then out a window wailed
"Oy: where's me tigers 'ead?"
"Foot foot from its tail"
Moving along we got to the Siamangs  which are, I am surprised to find, Gibbons rather than apes.  When we were in the Lemurs they were very noisy but had clmed down by the time we got there.
That definitely looks like a Funky Gibbon.

Next door was the Orang Utang enclosure.  To me they have in the past always looked quite small, but this one was a major bruiser.

Mentone and nearby

 In my last post I mentioned getting my binoculars back from the zoo. I subsequently found that they had a problem focussing, such that they needed to visit binocular hospital.  For Swarovski, in Melbourne, that means Mentone Optical so we headed off there down the Nepean Highway.  Frances had found an Historic Walk around Mentone so we planned to do that once the patient had been ministered to.  The material for the walk included: "Parking is located at Mentone Railway Station and at the rear of Mentone Shopping Centre behind Mentone Parade " What the note didn't say was that nearly all the parking at the station and nearby would be taken, presumably by commuters and people going to the school!  We found a spot in a side street about 400m from the opticians (see X in map below).  Our approximate route is the yellow line. A couple of additional places

 On Sunday 10th August we took #2 grand-daughter to the Melbourne Zoo.  It was a very pleasant outing and I was very pleased with how well #2 new her way around the Zoo.  I could have added lots of birds (eg Noisy Pitta, Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stork, Regent Honeyeater, Blue and Yellow Macaw) were it ot for the convention that birds in cages don't count! I didn't take photos until we got to the Meerkat enclosure, where they were irresistible.  They were very close and I didn't need my binoculars to see them! Heading back into the CBD Frances spotted a Pam-the-bird work we hadn't previously noticed.  Again, didn't need binoculars so see it. The Monday morning had clear skies with the sun reflecting off windows in the City. Albert Park Lake South

 I was intending to go to St Kilda Beach West but couldn't be bothered waiting 16 minutes for a #16 tram so walked over to the Lake.  Quite a good haul .  The reason for this is obviously the Caspian Tern, but it does remind me of the sketches from the 1960s involving Messrs Cleese, Barker and Corbett. Cygnets are always good. I did see a modest (~10 ducklings) family of Aus Wood Dux but too far away to photograph.  As they were right at the South end of the Lake I would be reasonably confident they are nothing to do with the big family. In the most Northern of the SE ponds sundry Dusky Moorhens were sitting quite tightly causing me to wonder if there eggs under them. At one point I had three Great Crested Grebes in one binocular view, but couldn't nail this with my camera.
