 This is a new blog I am starting up to hold posts about our explorations around Melbourne (and probably the rest of Victoria) from our apartment.  Material about life in the apartment will continue to appear in The Houses of FranMart and matters relating to Mallacoota and surrounds in Mallacoota Weather and Wildlife.

A snuffle or two on the South Side

 We needed to get the car serviced today so headed for City Mazda, with a plan to walk back to 505.  Here is the intended route.  The basic route is Montague St; York St; Kingsway; St Kilda Rd. To get the weather out of the way.  It used to be said that if you don't like Melbourne weather wait 5 minutes and it will change.  Not this day: a foul wind at 0805 and it was still howling at 1500hrs. The first - but not the last - graffiti was under the tram line on Montague St.  This also features in today's second adventure. I am unsure what to call this decoration on the Golden Fleece Hotel.  It doesn't have the look or feel of graffiti: perhaps it is just decoration? Around South Yarra, St Kilda and Prahran

 This post has some images from walks close to 505: we took a tram to the start of the St Kilda leg.  The map shows the three areas. 1: South Yarra panhandle This is a little bit of a cheat as I don't yet have any photos from the area.  I have it on our list for future expeditions with camera in hand and possibly focusing on chimneys!   We did two morning walks there, extending from Fawkner Park across Toorak Road and up different streets to Domain Rd.  The area has a lot of non-modern buildings - in the Western element dominated by places adorned with Melbourne Grammar logos. 2: St Kilda East I discovered this area when driving along Barkly Rd, coming back from Rickett's Point.  It looked interesting so we took a tram to the Barkly Rd stop.  There is an impressive amount of street art at the St Kilda Junction stop! As we passed the Espy, Frances noted a huge mural of Paul Kelly on the Western side of the pub.  A visit is needed.  However on this trip my next image was in the A

Cape Nelson, the Port and Gannets

Our morning walk started up the street to the Botanic Gardens.  As we entered we noticed this sign, which was a tad surprising in the middle of the town!   Even more surprising was a second copy beside this canal on the edge of the gardens.  We were later told by the Gannet Guide that this is where Sammy often hangs out, showing great agility as he munches salmon that have also swum up the canal.  He has been coming annually for about 3 years: the seal which got publicity earlier in the year was Neal the Seal in Tasmania. The big news of the day was that as we emerged from the Gardens, Frances spotted a Rufous Bristlebird.  I was hoping for that even more than the Cape Gannet, as the Bristlebird was a lifer: my first for 2024!   After breakfast we headed off towards Cape Nelson with scenery and walking in mind.  No rain was forecast and none was showing on the radar.  This was not Scotch mist on the windscreen!
