 This is a new blog I am starting up to hold posts about our explorations around Melbourne (and probably the rest of Victoria) from our apartment.  Material about life in the apartment will continue to appear in The Houses of FranMart and matters relating to Mallacoota and surrounds in Mallacoota Weather and Wildlife.

A snuffle or two on the South Side

 We needed to get the car serviced today so headed for City Mazda, with a plan to walk back to 505.  Here is the intended route.  The basic route is Montague St; York St; Kingsway; St Kilda Rd. To get the weather out of the way.  It used to be said that if you don't like Melbourne weather wait 5 minutes and it will change.  Not this day: a foul wind at 0805 and it was still howling at 1500hrs. The first - but not the last - graffiti was under the tram line on Montague St.  This also features in today's second adventure. I am unsure what to call this decoration on the Golden Fleece Hotel.  It doesn't have the look or feel of graffiti: perhaps it is just decoration? This joint, when approached from the direction we came, definitely appeared to be a venue where affection could be negotiated.  However the building is very large and this is the back entrance: the front bit looks much more like a remedial massage operation (with the photos all of female...

Cape Nelson, the Port and Gannets

Our morning walk started up the street to the Botanic Gardens.  As we entered we noticed this sign, which was a tad surprising in the middle of the town!   Even more surprising was a second copy beside this canal on the edge of the gardens.  We were later told by the Gannet Guide that this is where Sammy often hangs out, showing great agility as he munches salmon that have also swum up the canal.  He has been coming annually for about 3 years: the seal which got publicity earlier in the year was Neal the Seal in Tasmania. The big news of the day was that as we emerged from the Gardens, Frances spotted a Rufous Bristlebird.  I was hoping for that even more than the Cape Gannet, as the Bristlebird was a lifer: my first for 2024!   After breakfast we headed off towards Cape Nelson with scenery and walking in mind.  No rain was forecast and none was showing on the radar.  This was not Scotch mist on the windscreen! Channelling my inner bogan

 Somehow or another I found that there is a Historic car racing club event at Sandown Park on the coming weekend, with free entry on Friday 8 November.  I haven't been to a car race for ages so thought this might be good.  There have been a few bits of interest in the lead up so I will start off the report now. The beginning was the difficulty I had finding the schedule for the Friday.  An email to the Event Secretary fixed that: it seems this is a practice day with the various classes having a few 15 minute sessions through the day.  My expectation is that it will be pretty low key driving, but I should be able to wander through the pits and check the cars up close.
