Go North (inner)
We had been told that there were lots of good Op-shops on Sydney Rd in Brunswick so we took ourselves off there. We had driven - very slowly - down the road back when it was the main way to get on to the Hume Highway. (These days either the M2 or St Georges Rd would be the choice.) This blog is thematic rather than chronological!
We started our foray at the Greek Orthodox Church of St John the Forerunner on Lygon St in North Carlton.
The tram didn't have good information and as Frances asked "Are we nearly there yet?" I saw the church right beside the tram. It was closed but looked very interesting: must go back one Sunday. Here is a door ..... an overview ...
... the dome ...
... and the belfry (sans bats).
The church was relatively modern, being built in 1968.
After going across to Sydney Rd was explored Christ Church, Brunswick. This was open and very interesting. Here is a view of the nave.
A close(ish) up of the Altar.
One of the stained glass windows attracted my attention because of ...
... the dedication. (I initially misread the date as being in WW1, and didn't think there was fighting in Crete then - as opposed to 1941!)
The Church is basically Anglican but some elements had more of a Catholic look and feel (for example, not being locked up). This decoration on a pulpit seemed very Orthodox. They do describe it as "Our open church..."
I found this notice amusing.
Here is the spire of the church.
I can't find out when the fairly old style - at least in appearance - Quarry Hotel in East Brunswick (back on Lygon St) was built.
A health food outlet on Lygon St. Very little stock, it is mainly an outlet for their on-line business.
The old Brunswick Town Hall - now part (with Coburg) of Merri-bek, It costs ~$2000 per day to hire the venue!
A Sydney Rd streetscape. A fire truck earned lots of points coming down the wrong side of the tram tracks (ie inbound on the outbound track) and running a red light. As the road is pretty narrow and a lot of traffic he - I think a male - did slow down for the light so only a 9: points are awarded for bravery, not common sense!
A disused Methodist Church on Sydney Rd with good brickwork. A passer-by offered to tell me 'a story' about this, but while he he did have a decent set of teeth he did have the shakes, so I thanked him and declined.
The area has a lot of street art (note: several of the sites proffered by Google have such intrusive ads the sites are unusable - obviously forgottrn the old Google slogan "Don't be evil"). Here are some samples.
This was on part of the Quarry Hotel.
This one is by Heesco who has done the work at Yarram. I particularly like the aerosol can.

This must count as a mural, rather than street art! May be associated with Christ Church.
